Rev. Dr. Roosevelt Hughes Jr.
Senior Pastor of John Street Baptist Church (JSBC)

Pastor Hughes is a native of Mississippi, married to the former Grace Ahadzie. Together they are blessed with 3 adult children and 2 beautiful grandchildren.

Pastor Hughes moved to Worcester Ma from Nashville, TN in August of 1983 with his family as the Sr. Pastor of John Street Baptist Church (JSBC). Pastor Hughes is a Godly example of a leader and family man, he has been married for more than 40 years and a proud father and grandfather. Rev. Dr. Roosevelt Hughes, Jr holds a Dr. in Ministry (D. Min) and a Dr. in Divinity (D. Div.). As the Sr. pastor of JSBC and a visionary leader he also serves as a mentor to other pastors and their ministries.

Pastor Hughes completed a Bachelor of Arts in sociology with a history minor at Lane College, he continued his education at Fisk University earning a Master of Arts in sociology of religion under the tutelage of noted scholar and author, DR. C. Eric Lincoln-- friend and Mentor.

Pastor Hughes is a strong advocate of continuing education as well as a noted community activist deeply committed to preaching and teaching the faithfulness of God to all generations.

Pastor Hughes attended the School of Divinity at Vanderbilt University, he also attended International Seminary, earning a Dr. of Ministry with a concentration in Biblical Counseling. He attended the International Bible Institute and seminary receiving a Dr of Divinity degree (honorary). Pastor is an alumni of The Kelly Miller Smith Institute Pastor's forum at Vanderbilt University - The late Dr. Kelly Miller Smith a noted civil rights activist.

Pastor Hughes is committed to winning the city of Worcester for God. During the past 32 years, Pastor Hughes served as the first President of the W.B.C.A. (Worcester Black Clergy Alliance), The Inaugural Class President of the Worcester Clergy and Police Academy and the Vice President of the executive board with the American Baptist Churches of Massachusetts. Pastor Hughes has served on several: Hate Crime and Violence, Vice Moderator of the Central Association of the American Baptist Churches, Advisors for the Youvile house, a temporary family shelter, Board of Directors of W.A.I.C.H (Worcester Area Inter Faith Coalition for the Homeless), Board of Directors of G.W.C.F (Greater Worcester Community Foundation, Inc.). and currently serve on the Board of Directors of R.C.C.I.C (Redemption Christian Church International Church).

Pastor Hughes is deeply committed to world mission and evangelism while sponsoring ministries in India and Uganda. Pastor Hughes is the founder and President of the International Ministries Institute (IMI). IMI school of ministries’ provides Diploma and Certificate as well as introductory theological training for clergy and laity.

Pastor Hughes served as an instructor for the United Baptist Convention of Massachusetts, Rhode Island and New Hampshire Congress of Christian Education during 1989 to 1991; His concentration was on the Black Church, Old and New Testament. He served as the Protestant Chaplain for the Harvard Nursing Home from 1984 to 1988. He currently serves as the Worcester Protestant Fire Chaplain since 2001.

His decision for himself and the church, is to make disciples as we pursue the city and nations for God. We here at JSBC provide a nurturing environment for a diverse population as we address the spiritual, physical, psychological, and social needs and demands of the community.

Rev. Dr. Roosevelt Hughes Jr. joins the JSBC family in welcoming all who desires to be saved and grow into the plans God attended for their lives. We here at JSBC believe you will find a warm fellowship, growing through Christian education, celebrating Christ through praise and worship and witnesses through social outreach and evangelism. Our desire remains to empower and share hope with people through the saving Gospel of Jesus Christ.
